Bookkeeper or CPA: who should help with your business books?

A bookkeeper and a CPA can support the same business at different stages. The practical question is which work needs to happen now and who has agreed to handle it.

By Alexander Knight, owner of Knight Bookkeeping

Routine records need a consistent process

Bookkeeping commonly includes organizing financial activity, reviewing categories, reconciling bank and credit-card accounts, and preparing recurring financial reports. Cleanup and catch-up projects address inaccurate or unfinished records. These tasks provide a foundation for understanding the business throughout the year.

Tax and specialized accounting need their own scope

A CPA or other appropriately qualified tax professional may handle tax preparation, tax advice, or specialized accounting work under their engagement. Individual firms offer different services, and some also provide bookkeeping. Confirm credentials and scope directly rather than assuming every accounting professional offers the same work.

Choose a starting point based on the problem

If your QuickBooks file is months behind or balances do not match statements, ask about bookkeeping review and a plan to get current. If your question concerns how a transaction should be treated for tax purposes, bring that question to your tax professional. If a filing deadline is approaching, involve both providers early so the bookkeeping work follows a realistic sequence.

Make the handoff explicit

Agree on the reporting period, reconciled accounts, supporting documents, open questions, and responsibility for requested changes. If a tax professional proposes an adjustment, clarify who will record it and how the updated records will be retained. A clear handoff reduces duplicated work and conflicting versions of the books.

Where Knight Bookkeeping fits

Knight Bookkeeping provides QuickBooks Online bookkeeping for owner-led service businesses in Salem and Southern New Hampshire, with remote service. It does not offer tax filing or payroll processing. A discovery call can establish whether monthly bookkeeping, catch-up, cleanup, or setup is the relevant starting point. Your tax professional remains responsible for the tax work you engage them to perform.
